Mixis Quartet performs Brigitte Schiffer's String Quartet

  • Einsteinsaal Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften 22-23 Jägerstraße Berlin, BE, 10117 Germany (map)
The Mixis Quartet will perform a new composition - the String Quartet by Brigitte Schiffer, a former composition student at the UDK/Hochschule für Musik (class of Heinz Tiessen) and ethnomusicologist, who had to flee to Egypt as a German Jew in 1934.

The composition is very interesting, not only because of the composers UDK past, but because Schiffer also processed material from her field recordings in the Siwa Oasis in the Sahara (the original phonograph recordings from 1932/33 still exist) etc. All of this and more will be discussed at the event in December.
The evening is the prelude to a large international workshop on the digitalisation of the Arabic collections of the Berlin Phonogram Archive, which Dr. Matthias Pasdzierny is organising in collaboration with colleagues from the Arab-German Young Academy of Science and the Ethnological Museum at the Humboldt Forum.
