Programme:

Puccini “Crisantemi” for String Quartet

Puccini's elegy for string quartet ”Crisantemi” was written in 1890 in a single night as a response to the death of the Duke of Savoy.

Mendelssohn String Quartet No.2 in a minor, Op.13

Composed in 1827 when Mendelssohn was only 18 years old, the A minor Quartet is Mendelssohn's first mature string quartet and one of his most passionate works. It is also one of the earliest and most significant examples of cyclic form in music.

1: Adagio - Allegro Vivace, 2: Adagio non lento

Dimitri Shostakovich String Quartet No.8 in c minor, Op.110

Composed in just three days in the summer of 1960, Shostakovich dedicated the score “to the memory of the victims of fascism and war” and, in public, said that it was inspired by the sight of the bombed-out ruins of Dresden. Yet, in private, he referred to the work as a memorial for its composer and it is very clearly filled with highly personal references and musical quotations from other works of his. Its composition coincided with a period of deep despair in Shostakovich’s life.

The Exhibition:
